Rise of the Runelords
…And the Gods said to the inhabitants of the Old World, “Once only will we stretch forth the power of our hands to save you from the end of your own folly, once only and no more. Once only will we change the world, that the world may not be destroyed by the hell-bomb creatures that you in your pride and carelessness have called up out of the depths of matter. And once only will we hold our Change upon the world, and the number of the years of Change will be forty-nine thousand, nine hundred, and forty-nine.
And with this Change let the world no longer be called Old, but New. And the gods changed the face of the world. Great storms raged unceasingly, earthquakes, and all manner of natural turmoil covered the earth, and in a flash understanding came to the inhabitants of Dakara. The gods were coming to take charge. The land was torn up and destroyed, and remade again. Heaven and earth and the very gates of Hell shook for nearly fifty thousand years. All of Dakara was changed; Technology was removed and magic introduced.
However, as punishment to mortals, the gods prohibited the inhabitants from ever embracing technology as they had done in the past. They were to never again live as their ancestors of thousands of millennia ago had done. As humanity plead for mercy, the gods decided to bestow greater portions of their powers upon Dakara, and magic came into being as a way of life for its people.
